DJ Lubi Presents...
Brazilian Carnival 2024
Saturday, 17th February 2024
Brudenell Social Club / Leeds / UK
19:30
After great Brazilian Beats Leeds events at Brudenell Social Club, Belgrave Music Hall and Hyde Park Book Club (sold out) in 2023, Leeds world music legend DJ Lubi brings his much loved Brazilian music session back in February 2024 for a special Brazil Carnival session. The date is Saturday 17th February, the final night of Carnival in Brazil, and the venue is once again Brudenell Social Club and features three of Leeds' finest Brazilian music bands.

Headliners are Gustavo Andrade & The Brasukas led by Brazilian saxophonist Gustavo Andrade from Sao Paulo. He came to Leeds in 2019 to study jazz at Leeds Conservatoire and quickly became a member of several top jazz, nusoul and hip-hop bands in the city. After the pandemic re-opening in summer 2021, he returned to the scene playing Brazilian music, firstly with his bossa jazz band Quinteto Gustavo Andrade and then in 2023, with his 11 piece big band The Brasukas. They've played great shows in Leeds at Brudenell Social Club, Hifi Club, Belgrave Music Hall and Hyde Park Book Club as well as a sold-out Blues Kitchen Manchester Brazil Carnival special in February 2023. They perform the full spectrum of Brazilian music - Samba, MPB (Música Popular Brasileiro), Bossa Nova, Samba Rock, Axé, Forro, Brazilian soul, Frevo, Rio Jazz-Funk - and feature top musicians from the Leeds jazz/world music scenes who play with bands like Plantfood, Carioca Soul, Rumberos de Palo, Awen Ensemble, Mangorata with Portuguese vocalist Raquel Alvaro leading the party vibes from the front. They play Gustavo's arrangements of classic Brazilian music by artists such as Leci Brandao, Seu Jorge, Jorge Ben, Ivete Sangalo, Tim Maia, Tom Jobim, Gilberto Gil and Djavan. There's simply no other Brazilian music band like them in the north. Tonight they'll be playing music from across Brasil as we celebrate the closing night of Carnival. Come down for some samba magic.

Support comes from Tempo Feliz, the popular Leeds-based Brazil-inspired ensemble performing an exciting fusion of original grooves/compositions and electrifying arrangements of Brazilian classics. Taking their lead from the multifaceted musical landscape of Brazil, they fuse funk, soul, jazz and disco vibes with Brazilian percussion and styles, creating their own original music with flavours of samba, bossa-nova and MPB. The 8-piece ensemble were a Music:Leeds/Launchpad-supported artist group and released their debut album "Respirar" in 2021.They've played festivals such as Kendal Calling, Port Erin Jazz Festival (Isle Of Man) and Chapel Allerton Arts Festival as well as venues across Leeds and the north, and in 2022, they supported Brazilian music legend Marcos Valle in Manchester. They've been quiet on the gigging front for a while due to writing and recording their second album but they return in 2024 to open up this Brasil Carnival party at Brudenell.

Since we are celebrating the final night of carnival in Brazil, we need samba drummers for this gig. Once again, Leeds' finest bateria (percussion drumming group) Capela Do Samba, led by mestre Gez Heb, will be blasting their Rio favela batucada beats in the Community Room. Dancing is compulsory.
