Exactly a year since their last sold out EP launch in Leeds at Hyde Park Book Club, Heritage are back with a new EP, new music and are launching it at Brudenell Social Club on February 3rd 2024, their first ever headline show at the legendary venue. Not only that but it's a great triple bill with support from Mikoudi and newbies Blodeuynn. Another top "DJ Lubi Presents" night showcasing the brightest and best future soul/nujazz made in Leeds.
Heritage are the dynamic 9-piece future soul/nujazz ensemble who burst straight out of Leeds a few years ago and have been lighting up shows in the city and beyond with their irresistible original tunes and exhilarating live shows, winning hearts left, right, and centre....from young jazz rebels to old school soul heads. Their live shows are dynamite, featuring a trio of vocalists harmonising over heavily syncopated beats and some seriously impressive solos. Heritage gigs always go off.
Their debut EP ‘Dystopian Land’, which dropped in October 2022, really put them on the map and pushed their music and reputation beyond their home city. ‘The Suits’, the first track on the EP, made the BBC Introducing ‘Track of the Week’ slot. Another track was featured on the Bandcamp Weekly show of staff favourite picks. It also had strong support on stations like Jazz FM, Totally Wired Radio, JazzFunkSoul Radio, Ness Radio, Radio X (Germany), Global Soul Radio, The Face Radio (Brooklyn NYC), Soul Power Radio, Steam Radio, Radio Nula (Slovenia), to name a few.
Their vocal style is inspired by the likes of Lianne La Havas, Erykah Badu, and Nai Palm of Hiatus Kaiyote. When it comes to rhythm, they are grooving to the beats of Anderson .Paak. Kamaal Williams, Carrtoons and Nubiyan Twist. The result? A delicious blend of crowd-moving beats and heart-stirring vocal melodies that are uniquely Heritage style.
Following in the footsteps of fellow Leeds Conservatoire graduates like Nubiyan Twist, TC & The Groove Family, Jasmine Myra and Fergus Quill, Heritage have been making waves in the Leeds jazz/soul/global beats scene since they first hit the stage in August 2021. After quickly building up a local following at home, they took their future soul vibes to other cities including London, Sheffield, Bristol and Manchester, both as headliners and as supports to acts like Secret Night Gang (Brownswood) and TC & The Groove Family (Worm Discs).
Heritage had an incredible summer in 2023, spreading their wings and performing at multiple major festivals including Gilles Peterson's We Out Here, Wilderness Festival, Tramlines Festival, Leeds Jazz Festival and Rosa Festival, bringing their music to even more diverse and enthusiastic audiences.
Tonight, they will be launching their new EP "Fight Or Feel" featuring two new songs - " Deep End" and "Side Effects" - with some tasty remixes. Plus they'll be playing more new material alongside some old favourites.
Support comes from another top Leeds ensemble. Mikoudi play future soul/alt-jazz/electronica with broken beats and 1970s jazz funk influences. Musically, they admire artists like Nubiyan Twist/Hiatus Kaiyote/Allysha Joy, who have the same focus as Mikoudi for strong upfront vocals married to heavy beats. As a band co-led by a singer and drummer, that is to be expected. However, Mikoudi also leave plenty of space for all the musicians to solo and their original compositions are well crafted numbers that appeal to both listeners and dancers.
In the last 12 months, they've done some high profile support slots, including a sold out Hyde Park Book Club show with Heritage back in January 2023, a packed "Acid Jazz & Other Illicit Grooves" exhibition event at the Old Woollen in Farsley supporting London/UK soul legend OMAR. More support slots followed including one with New Zealand drum maestro Myele Manzanza, and a Leeds Jazz Festival appearance at Brudenell Social Club opening for London jazz rockers Pyjaen. Last summer, they performed at Manchester Jazz Festival, Wilderness Festival and Gilles Peterson's much loved We Out Here Festival. In autumn 2023, they had a trip to London to support jazz flute master Tenderlonius and then capped off a great year with their own SOLD OUT Hyde Park Book Club Leeds show launching their most recent single "In My Head".
Mikoudi usually bring young lion Leeds hip-hop MC Oliver Rees onstage to guest on a couple of numbers and the result is always absolute fire. Watch out for this collaboration to make it onto a recording in the not too distant future. With a new EP destined for 2024, come down and check out the new music they are making.
And if that's not enough of a great night, come down super early and check out Leeds rising stars of neo-soul/hip-hop jazz Blodeuynn, featuring the incredible beats and grooves of multi-instrumentalist whizzkid producer Alex Williams and the sweet and soulful voice of lead singer Alys Watson. They make insanely good original soul music with great beats and jazz overtones that show influences such as Erykah, Dilla, Anderson .Paak and Robert Glasper. Still students at Leeds Conservatoire, they've gigged around the city a fair deal but tonight, it's their first time at the Brudenell. Get down super early and see the next big Leeds breakout soul/jazz act at the start of their journey.
