While the mainstream has noticed, with the band already receiving heavy support from Clash, DIY, The 405, The Line Of Best Fit, and being invited to perform on the NME\/BBC Radio 1 stage at the Reading and Leeds festivals, it’s the incredible amount of underground fan-driven support that has marked Post War Glamour Girls out as a major band to watch.\n\nTackling themes of stress, anxiety, depression, the class system, religion, war and government, the band decamped to the remote village of Skerray on the North Coast of Scotland with producers Jamie Lockhart and Lee Smith of Greenmount Studios (Pulled Apart By Horses, I Like Trains, Frank Turner, The Vaccines) to disconnect from the world and place themselves entirely in the album recording process for ‘Swan Songs’\n\nFrontman and lyricist James Smith explains “We decided with this album that we wanted to get lost during the recording process. To let it consume us entirely throughout. No distractions from our day to day lives. No dashing mid-take to get to work on time. No phone calls from our landlords. No other commitments. Just two solid weeks of living it.”\n\nWith no phone signal, no Wifi and not a lot of anything else to do, the band spent their days playing music for hours on end and their nights sitting round a table cooking for each other, drinking local whiskey and setting the world to rights. Most recently Sam has been on the road playing multiple sold-out dates opening for Matthew \u0026amp; the Atlas.\n\nSam’s music feels inextricably bound in the concept of “hiraeth”, a Welsh-language word for which there is no direct translation but what the University of Wales likened to \"homesickness tinged with grief or sadness over the lost or departed.”\n\nHis debut album ‘In Darkened Rooms’ is a collection of songs that have led Sam to this moment in time. “I guess usually a debut record is a snapshot from a certain time in an artist’s career..”, says Sam, “but as this was made over a longer period than most I think stylistically it maybe reflects a wider palette of influence, and as a result it sees me sonically exploring a few different routes”. The result is a record that audibly draws inspiration from a number of places, including confessional indie-folk, postrock, Americana, and traditional folk music, along with other cultural and literary influences. But ultimately, says Sam “it all still comes from the same voice - these are my songs, and I live and die by them”.\n\nThe title of the record is a lyric taken from the track “In The Morning” but also reflects the winter period in which Sam finished writing the record. Despite having lived in the musically-rich but landlocked city of Leeds for the last few years, Sam returned to the coastlines of his beloved North Wales where he spent a week alone, overlooking the mountain range of Snowdonia (a beautiful sight depicted in the cover art, shot by longtime friend and collaborator Sam Bond). Between sessions he would gather his thoughts on long walks, and was struck by just how quickly and dramatically the light and scenery could change.\n\nOlder songs are revisited on the record; the lyrics to intro track “Camera Lens” taken from a poem written by Sam as a teenager, and the inclusion of “The Blackout”, an early single which on its initial release was named BBC Radio Wales’ track of the year. The newest songs, however, hint at a future musical direction - from the bravely sparse and introspective “Lacuna” (partly inspired by watching Michel Gondry’s “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”), to album closer “Nantucket”, with its slow build, whispered harmonies, and its textured, crashing finale.\n\nThough often faced with questions about the length of time taken to make and release this record, Sam stresses the importance of timing and feeling. “The time needs to feel right, which hasn’t always been the case. Metavari describes the process as a “scribbling on top” of Lynch’s films. “I’ve followed David Lynch’s career my entire adult life; cherished pages from a series of love letters that feel like they were written just for me. This project is the semblance of what I’ve scribbled, in my own language, on top of those letters as I write back to the man who has inspired me more than he’ll ever know.” The album comes packaged in a deluxe reverse-board printed jacket with a custom die-cut center hole, also included is a special 8-page booklet and digital download card. To record it, the band reunited with SikTh guitarist and Black Flame producer Dan Weller (Enter Shikari, Young Guns), while mixing and mastering was completed by Adam \"Nolly\" Getgood and Ermin Hamidovic, the dream team behind Architects’ Holy Hell. The result is Bury Tomorrow’s most technical, anthemic album yet. And while vocalist and lyricist Dani Winter Bates has long been one of metal’s loudest advocates for the importance of discussing mental health, this time he’s delved explicitly into his own experiences, writing his most brutally personal lyrics to date. “This album is for me as well as for the fans,” says vocalist and lyricist Dani Winter Bates. “It was a cathartic process to address some of the darkest moments I’ve had in my life. For some people it’ll be a hard listen. But I thought I have to do this, if I’m going to go in, I’m going to go in. I’m not doing something half arsed. There is nothing lyrically I would change on this entire album.” Dan began writing the lyrics for Cannibal, and while he has penned tracks about his mental health before, this time things were different. Dropping all metaphors and opaque sentiments, he’s addressed things head on, hoping the album’s unapologetically frank approach will help people who are struggling to understand they aren’t alone. “I wanted to live by my words,” he says. “I talk to people about normalising mental health so how can I write an album where I’m not talking about mental health? The normalisation of mental health is what saves lives. I want people to see the light in the dark. If they delve into that they can find solace in the discussion, the normalisation, the positive action by discussing this.” Lyrically, there’s an apocalyptic feel to Cannibal. While tracks like Quake and Better Below go deep into Dani’s lowest moments, the album also explores the impact of social media on Gods And Machines as well as what he refers to as “society’s oppressive, horrific nature”. “The term Cannibal refers to being eaten away by your own thoughts but also eaten away by other humans,” he explains. “We’re not kind to ourselves, let alone kind to each other.” Work on Cannibal started almost immediately after the band released the deluxe version of Black Flame in June 2019 and was completed partly on the road. Soon after, the band headed to the studio, recording drums and rhythm guitars at Middle Farm studios, in South Devon, with the remainder of the album recorded at Vale studios in Worcestershire. Putting into practice the lessons they had learnt when making Black Flame, the band tore into, rewrote and scrapped any tracks that weren’t up to scratch. While the process was far from easy and pushed the band musically and emotionally to their limit, there’s no doubt that this is their best and bravest album to date. Now 14 years into their career, Cannibal will be the album that pushes Bury Tomorrow to even greater heights. 2020 will be their year. “I want it to grow our fan base and capitalise what we did with Black Flame,” says Dani. “Black Flame connected with a lot of people. It follows the band’s previous two studio albums – ‘Ellipsis’ (2016) and ‘Opposites’ (2013) – both of which went straight to #1. The band’s approach to opus eight was simple. Keep things fresh and maintain the wide-eyed wonder of what they do. Surprise themselves and each other. Push things to their furthest extremes. Their first building block in embracing the new was to turn to an old friend. In came Rich Costey, producer of ‘Ellipsis’. “This is a very forward-looking album from a personal perspective and a societal perspective,” explains frontman Simon Neil. “The title is about seeing the joy in things changing, rather than the sadness. Change means progression and evolution. You can retain everything you loved before, but let’s lose the bad shit. It’s about trying to take back control.” That idea manifests itself in various ways. On a personal level that might be a relationship which has reached a point where it’s in both parties’ interest to separate. And on a wider scale, it’s about standing up for what you believe in. Sonically, Biffy Clyro playfully push the outer reaches of their sound to the extreme – often in the case of the same song. Opening track ‘North of No South’ hits hard before finding the space for the Johnston brothers to unleash some soaring Queen-style vocal harmonies, before ‘The Champ’ throws piano, cinematic strings (conducted by Bruce Springsteen collaborator Rob Mathes at Abbey Road) and Biffy’s prototyped jagged rhythms into the mix without ever losing any of its sleekness. Other songs are far more direct. ‘Tiny Indoor Fireworks’ is the best direct rock anthem they’ve ever written, somehow snappy, melodic and light on its feet while feeling so natural you could imagine it was conceived in minutes. Meanwhile, ‘Space’ is a natural successor from previous lighters-in-the-air highlights ‘Many of Horror’ and ‘Rearrange’. It’s a sincere message of reconciliation for someone you love, and Biffy’s most tender, unguarded moment from the sweet spot of their catalogue. How can you conclude an album of such esoteric diversity? Biffy launch headfirst into ‘Cop Syrup’. There’s the rush of ‘The Vertigo of Bliss’, a detour into Sub Pop-style grunge and manic shrieks which wouldn’t sound out of place on a Liturgy record. But then it contorts again, first into ethereal orchestration and then with a final burst of violence. It’s an ending to celebrate. To coincide with the album’s launch, Biffy Clyro have today shared the new track ‘End Of’. The aggression is old school Biffy, but the out-of-nowhere piano break and a final rally of rampaging riffs matches their current unpredictable flair. The Cribs had been invited to support Foo Fighters at Manchester's Etihad Stadium, in what could very well have been the band's last hurrah. Hanging out backstage, chatting over a few post-show drinks, The Cribs confided their recent struggles to their new friend. “Dave was just like, ‘Forget about all that business stuff, just come out to LA and make a record at our studio’ – Dave made that offer to us,” Ryan recalls\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe three brothers are now scattered over nearly 5,000 miles, with Gary in Portland, Oregon, Ryan in Queens, New York and Ross in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Engineered by James Brown (Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys) and mixed by frequent Cribs collaborator John O'Mahony (who also worked on 'Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever' and 'For All My Sisters') the record took shape over two weeks in LA, plus an extra week of overdubs at Halfling Studios in Portland. Mercifully, it is not a poor-me album about the ills of the industry. No, they deal with that on the first track, a slice of surf-ready sunshine pop with gorgeous harmonies called 'Goodbye'. “That was our way of saying ‘goodbye’ to that period of our lives. Let's move on,” says Ross.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAfter that, no indulgence is made to the band’s struggle. Instead, it’s wall-to-wall Cribs bangers, the fruit of that special, symbiotic relationship between the songwriting, singing brothers, drawing on the boiled-down influences they felt had always been there: The Motown stomp of 'Never Thought I'd Feel Again' and 'Under The Bus Station Clock', red and blue album-era Beatles ('Running Into You' and 'In The Neon Night', respectively), melodic 70's style pop on 'Deep Infatuation’, and even early work by their own band.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAnd they return with a familiar friend, too – Lee Ranaldo, ex-of Sonic Youth, and the man whose spoken word verses on 2007 track 'Be Safe' helped elevate the song to anthem status amongst the bands legendarily devout fanbase. Here, Ranaldo plays guitar on 'I Don’t Know Who I Am' – and Be Safe Part II (Be Safer?) it ain’t. The song started out as a jam in Ross’s garage which the brothers later tracked at 606, before Ranaldo layered sheets of white-noise guitar over the recording at Sonic Youth’s Hoboken studio, and a few backing vocals for good measure.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIn a typically downplayed way, the band have honed in on what’s so special about The Cribs: really bloody good songs.
