Smith.\n\nThe four-piece have spent the last few years building up an impressive body of work, showcasing an innate knack for creating intricately layered and intelligent compositions with an almost theatrical Arcade Fire-like build up. While the mainstream has noticed, with the band already receiving heavy support from Clash, DIY, The 405, The Line Of Best Fit, and being invited to perform on the NME\/BBC Radio 1 stage at the Reading and Leeds festivals, it’s the incredible amount of underground fan-driven support that has marked Post War Glamour Girls out as a major band to watch.\n\nTackling themes of stress, anxiety, depression, the class system, religion, war and government, the band decamped to the remote village of Skerray on the North Coast of Scotland with producers Jamie Lockhart and Lee Smith of Greenmount Studios (Pulled Apart By Horses, I Like Trains, Frank Turner, The Vaccines) to disconnect from the world and place themselves entirely in the album recording process for ‘Swan Songs’\n\nFrontman and lyricist James Smith explains “We decided with this album that we wanted to get lost during the recording process. To let it consume us entirely throughout. No distractions from our day to day lives. No dashing mid-take to get to work on time. No phone calls from our landlords. No other commitments. Just two solid weeks of living it.”\n\nWith no phone signal, no Wifi and not a lot of anything else to do, the band spent their days playing music for hours on end and their nights sitting round a table cooking for each other, drinking local whiskey and setting the world to rights. This closeness and bond can be felt throughout the album, as James says “This record is the product of the band's dependence on each other in isolation. Most recently Sam has been on the road playing multiple sold-out dates opening for Matthew \u0026amp; the Atlas.\n\nSam’s music feels inextricably bound in the concept of “hiraeth”, a Welsh-language word for which there is no direct translation but what the University of Wales likened to \"homesickness tinged with grief or sadness over the lost or departed.”\n\nHis debut album ‘In Darkened Rooms’ is a collection of songs that have led Sam to this moment in time. “I guess usually a debut record is a snapshot from a certain time in an artist’s career..”, says Sam, “but as this was made over a longer period than most I think stylistically it maybe reflects a wider palette of influence, and as a result it sees me sonically exploring a few different routes”. The result is a record that audibly draws inspiration from a number of places, including confessional indie-folk, postrock, Americana, and traditional folk music, along with other cultural and literary influences. But ultimately, says Sam “it all still comes from the same voice - these are my songs, and I live and die by them”.\n\nThe title of the record is a lyric taken from the track “In The Morning” but also reflects the winter period in which Sam finished writing the record. Despite having lived in the musically-rich but landlocked city of Leeds for the last few years, Sam returned to the coastlines of his beloved North Wales where he spent a week alone, overlooking the mountain range of Snowdonia (a beautiful sight depicted in the cover art, shot by longtime friend and collaborator Sam Bond). Between sessions he would gather his thoughts on long walks, and was struck by just how quickly and dramatically the light and scenery could change.\n\nOlder songs are revisited on the record; the lyrics to intro track “Camera Lens” taken from a poem written by Sam as a teenager, and the inclusion of “The Blackout”, an early single which on its initial release was named BBC Radio Wales’ track of the year. The newest songs, however, hint at a future musical direction - from the bravely sparse and introspective “Lacuna” (partly inspired by watching Michel Gondry’s “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”), to album closer “Nantucket”, with its slow build, whispered harmonies, and its textured, crashing finale.\n\nThough often faced with questions about the length of time taken to make and release this record, Sam stresses the importance of timing and feeling. “The time needs to feel right, which hasn’t always been the case. Already, the Southampton quintet are responsible for some of metalcore’s most rousing anthems, and Cannibal is stacked with more glorious vocal hooks, razor-sharp riffs and sublime melodies that will solidify their seat at UK metal’s top table. To record it, the band reunited with SikTh guitarist and Black Flame producer Dan Weller (Enter Shikari, Young Guns), while mixing and mastering was completed by Adam \"Nolly\" Getgood and Ermin Hamidovic, the dream team behind Architects’ Holy Hell. The result is Bury Tomorrow’s most technical, anthemic album yet. And while vocalist and lyricist Dani Winter Bates has long been one of metal’s loudest advocates for the importance of discussing mental health, this time he’s delved explicitly into his own experiences, writing his most brutally personal lyrics to date. “This album is for me as well as for the fans,” says vocalist and lyricist Dani Winter Bates. “It was a cathartic process to address some of the darkest moments I’ve had in my life. For some people it’ll be a hard listen. But I thought I have to do this, if I’m going to go in, I’m going to go in. I’m not doing something half arsed. There is nothing lyrically I would change on this entire album.” Dan began writing the lyrics for Cannibal, and while he has penned tracks about his mental health before, this time things were different. Dropping all metaphors and opaque sentiments, he’s addressed things head on, hoping the album’s unapologetically frank approach will help people who are struggling to understand they aren’t alone. “I wanted to live by my words,” he says. “I talk to people about normalising mental health so how can I write an album where I’m not talking about mental health? The normalisation of mental health is what saves lives. I want people to see the light in the dark. If they delve into that they can find solace in the discussion, the normalisation, the positive action by discussing this.” Lyrically, there’s an apocalyptic feel to Cannibal. While tracks like Quake and Better Below go deep into Dani’s lowest moments, the album also explores the impact of social media on Gods And Machines as well as what he refers to as “society’s oppressive, horrific nature”. “The term Cannibal refers to being eaten away by your own thoughts but also eaten away by other humans,” he explains. “We’re not kind to ourselves, let alone kind to each other.” Work on Cannibal started almost immediately after the band released the deluxe version of Black Flame in June 2019 and was completed partly on the road. Soon after, the band headed to the studio, recording drums and rhythm guitars at Middle Farm studios, in South Devon, with the remainder of the album recorded at Vale studios in Worcestershire. Putting into practice the lessons they had learnt when making Black Flame, the band tore into, rewrote and scrapped any tracks that weren’t up to scratch. While the process was far from easy and pushed the band musically and emotionally to their limit, there’s no doubt that this is their best and bravest album to date. Now 14 years into their career, Cannibal will be the album that pushes Bury Tomorrow to even greater heights. 2020 will be their year. “I want it to grow our fan base and capitalise what we did with Black Flame,” says Dani. “Black Flame connected with a lot of people. I want Cannibal to take us to a new part of our career. It’s a great starting point for a discussion I’m excited for people to hear it. The move was sudden and unforeseen, just as I was tying a bow on the writing process for what would become my 2019 album, Oh My God. I bought a Four Track Tascam model 424 off of an old friend to help me get to the finish line, but much\u003cbr\u003eto my surprise and excitement, this new piece of equipment in my all-but-bare home didn’t help complete one album but rather inspire another: Sundowner. The new collection of songs came quickly and effortlessly as I did my best not to resist or refine the songs, but instead let them take shape all on their own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs the songs kept coming I cleared out the crowded shed that was sitting dormant in my backyard and built a makeshift studio before adding drums, lead guitar and piano to complete the demos. Each day I would teach myself basic recording techniques, watching the channels illuminate and pulse as if the machine were breathing, and then emerge in the evenings as the sun was getting low: - around 5:30 in the winter, when the Kansan sunsets look icy and distant, like a pink ember inside of a display case, and 9 o’clock in the summer, when the sunsets are warm and abstract.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLanding back home felt jarring juxtaposed with a life full of chaos and adventure with my band on the road. But at the very least, I was happy to have - for the first time in my adulthood - a place to close the door, with no temptations other than to work on music and reflect on what I had built since I left. It was a new form of isolation, one I had never explored or expected to experience. Not ready to let go of the hand of the California desert, I spent the winter decorating the best I knew how; with mementos from my previous home, cactus and aloe vera and covering the walls in pinewood - immediately earning my house it’s nickname, The Little Los Angeles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn January 2019 I contacted my friend and producer Brad Cook to help recreate what I had made in my shed. We chose to work in Texas; we wanted to make sure the record was done far away from any coastline, and in the heart of America. Brad played bass and some keys on the album, but beyond that he encouraged and inspired me to play almost everything else. All lead guitar, proper drums (save the drums on “A Night At The Little Los Angeles”), mellotron and what I believe to be the albums secret weapon - a WWII era collapsible and slightly out-of-tune pump organ - were performed by me. We did, however, bring in James Krivchenia towards the end of the session to fill out the percussion. It was an honor to work with him as he built maracas from\u003cbr\u003epecans and played on the floor of the live room, adding flourish wherever he saw fit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the last evening of the session, after everything had wrapped, we all climbed on top of an empty water tower on the property, giving us a view in all directions. To the North you could see an endless Texas, with long wisps of cirrus clouds above the desert floor, and to the South there was Mexico, the recent detention camps only a mile beyond, with large cumulus clouds hovering over, bringing us to an ominous pause. To the West, towards the setting sun, the two families of clouds merged, holding the last light of the day in purple and orange. Below, a freight train cut the landscape in half as it whistled in the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlmost as soon as the session wrapped, I was off and away on press trips and then proper tours for Oh My God, which came out in April that same year. Sundowner sat inside of a hard drive back at Sonic Ranch and did not see the light of day, until I found myself, as did the rest of the world, stuck inside their home and in quarantine in March 2020. My second year of touring for Oh My God was cancelled. Brad, Jerry and I worked from our respective homes, sending notes back and forth as we worked alone but together to mix the album, and suddenly, just like that, Sundowner was finished.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSongs, like sunsets, are fleeting, and it’s only due to a willingness and desire to catch them that you ever, if even only for a moment, grab a hold of one. When writing Sundowner, I was lucky to have had the Tascam 424 there to help capture both. Sundowner is my attempt to put the Middle American twilight -- it’s beauty profound, though not always immediate -- into sound. It is a depiction of isolation. Of the past. Of an uncertain future. Of provisions. Of an omen. Of a dead deer. Of an icon. Of a Los Angeles themed hotel in rural Kansas. Of billowing campfires, a mermaid and a highway lined in rabbit fur.
