Is It Light Where You Are’ is the debut album fromArt School Girlfriend, moniker of Welshproducer, multi-instrumental musician and songwriterPolly Mackey. Mostly written over a twoweek period of 14-hour solo studio sessions, the bulkof her album is torn straight from a journalkept throughout 2019. Those pages chronicle the endof a US tour, the tumultuous ending of asix-year relationship and Mackey’s journey back toLondon from Margate, where she lived andco-owned a book shop with her then girlfriend. “Therecord starts with that feeling of being onthe precipice of change,” she explains. “Before decidingto pull everything apart, go through it alland come out the other side.” While the lyrics areautobiographical, the full story can be heard inthe album’s sonic relief map. “The main theme is dualitybetween light and dark, lightness andheaviness. The production sort of mimics human emotions:there’s a lot of beauty buriedunderneath these uncomfortable-to-listen-to sounds.”
