DJ Lubi Presents
Goddess Collective + Elf Mode
Sunday 2nd April 2023
Hyde Park Book Club / Leeds / UK
19:30

April's "DJ Lubi Presents" show at Hyde Park Book Club Leeds is another showcase of the city's vibrant DIY jazz scene and the young musicians/bands making it happen. Firstly, a welcome return to the venue for kicking world jazz crew Goddess Collective supported by a new contemporary fusion jazz band called Elf Mode featuring some familiar faces.

Goddess Collective are a well established 7-piece global beats/fusion jazz band based in Leeds and are made up of a women/non-binary majority. Having met during their studies in Leeds Conservatoire, they came together from a place of wanting to feel empowered in a male dominated music industry and strive for inclusivity in their music and at their gigs. Goddess Collective have featured heavily in the Leeds music scene ever since their debut at Hyde Park Book Club a few years back in and have since played Belgrave Music Hall, headlined at the Hifi Club and supported the London based Latin jazz powerhouse Colectiva (Jazz Re:Freshed Records) at Brudenell Social Club. They ventured to Manchester’s well loved Old Abbey Taphouse, and in the first year of their career as a band, they debuted at two major festivals - Tramlines (Sheffield) and Gilles Peterson's We Out Here Festival. With an ever developing sound, they take inspiration from the likes of Fazer, Ezra Collective and former Leeds mates TC & The Groove Family. At the end of January 2023, they released their debut single "Smash The Crash", a longtime popular track in their live sets. With two drummers, rhythm is always at the heart of their sound. Add that to their tight grooves and punchy horn lines and you'll soon be dancing to their music at the gig. Special guest artist for this show is longtime friend and tenor saxophonist Gustavo Andrade from Sao Paulo, already a well known musician in the Leeds jazz scene. A great gig just got even better.

As per usual, DJ Lubi champions brand new and emerging bands and artists at his shows, often giving them their first gigs before others. For this show, welcome to Elf Mode. A relatively new 21st century jazz fusion band featuring some familiar faces from previous/other Leeds bands. Saxophonist Emma Coates and electric bass player Jarred Dean were in Clover. Keys player Liam Mason is in Mangorata. They are joined by guitarist Harry Souter and drummer Herbie Underwood. They first formed at Leeds Conservatoire towards the end of 2022 and together, they make fiery tunes with spicy grooves and heavy beats. Taking notes from 90s jazz artists like Joshua Redman as well as contemporary British jazz like Waaju, their music is filled to the brim with hard-hitting lines over dynamic textures and powered electric energy. Get down early to catch another new breakout Leeds jazz band before the blow up big.
