Brudenell Presents
KONTIKI + Afrodesia
Saturday 2nd December 2023
Hyde Park Book Club / Leeds / UK
19:30

Longtime Leeds world music promoter DJ Lubi (Lubi Jovanovic) continues his autumn season at Hyde Park Book Club with another great double bill, this time it's afrobeat/afro-fusion vibes that will rock the basement of the venue. Bradord/Leeds afrofusion kings KONTIKI finally launch their long awaited debut album with support from up-and-coming young afro-jazz band Afrodesia.

Emerging from Bradford's Peace Studies basement parties, bringing together members of K.O.G & The Zongo Brigade and Tetes de Pois and resting upon a long history of live improvisation and musical collaboration, KONTIKI hit hard with a full throttle mix of afro-fusion, psychedelia and jazz with no aim other than to provide high energy, infectious and hypnotic dance grooves.

Having established themselves locally with the renowned reputation of knackering dancefloors at such well known venues as the Brudenell Social Club/Hifi Club Sunday Joint/The Domino Club/East Street Arts/Sunnybank Mills (leeds), The Triangle (Shipley), The Puzzle Hall Inn (Sowerby Bridge) and the 1-in-12 Club (Bradford), Kontiki have taken their highly danceable sonic offerings to the renowned Brixton Hootenanny's, Newcastle's The Cluny and played on stages at festivals such as BeatHerder (main stage), Salemango, Kallida, Fell Edge Fest, Ridgefest, Beulah and Leeds Beer Festival.

After a sell out release party of their 2019 debut EP 'Zucchini Weather' (almost destroying the 1st floor of their local venue due to by excessive dancing), Kontiki are massively hyped to be releasing 'Mangrove Big Head', their first full length album, on Saturday 2nd December at Hyde Park Book Club in Leeds. Expect heavy interlocking percussion and drums, playful and ripping sax lines, drippy but swirly delay-drenched guitar, chunky and funky hard driving bass grooves and soaring vocal chants. The band will be selling CD copies of the album after the show.

Support comes from Afrodesia - the next generation of Leeds' rising jazz stars emerging from Leeds Conservatoire and following in the footsteps of people like Nubiyan Twist, TC & The Groove Family, Jasmine Myra and Fergus Quill. They are an 8 piece afrobeat/afro-jazz ensemble led by alto saxophonist Reece Fogg. They've played a handful of shows in the last 12 months in Leeds at the Hifi Club and Brudenell Social Club and also ventured over the Pennines to rock the legendary Band On The Wall in Manchester. All their gigs have been firing sessions where their blend of classic afrobeat, highlife, contemporary jazz and Latin rhythms always pack the dancefloor. Come and check out some of the Leeds young jazz warriors of tomorrow.
