After a sold out Leeds Jazz Festival/Jazzland Sessions seated show at Brudenell Social Club for promoter DJ Lubi, Live Evil's homage to electric era Miles Davis is happening again but this time as a standing show and with some new Miles material added to the set list. Live Evil is an ensemble put together by tenor saxophonist Ben Powling (Vipertime, Ben Haskins Quartet) and Fergus Quill (The Fergus Quill Trio, Skwid Ink) to celebrate the music of Miles Davis' electric jazz-rock ensembles and recordings. They've drawn together some heavy players from the Leeds DIY underground jazz and improvised/experimental music scenes.
Formed specially for Leeds Jazz Festival 2022, Live Evil embraces, interprets and reimagines the music of Miles Davis’ electric period, which began with the much lauded "In A Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew" and included other groundbreaking albums albums such as "A Tribute To Jack Johnson", "On the Corner" and "Pangaea". Simultaneously abstract, funky, violent and introspective, shards of Miles’ electric sound can be heard throughout the UK jazz scene, and this influence is starkly apparent in the projects of the members of Live Evil, which include Vipertime, Skwid Ink, Ancient Infinity Orchestra, Long Legged Creatures, Treppenwitz and Mansion of Snakes. Live Evil will use Miles' music as a starting point and then take it to where their collective improvisational skills want it to resolve. Exactly how Miles did things on the original recordings. Three decades after he passed away, his musical legacy still inspires new generations of musicians. Come and hear the real "acid" jazz played by today's young jazz rebels of Leeds. Support this time comes from a musician/composer much respected and loved in the UK jazz and improvised music scenes. Matthew Bourne has a reputation as a fearlessly unpredictable pianist and composer and a passionate explorer of sound, possessed of a burning desire to make music on anything old, broken or infirm.
Born in Avebury, Wiltshire in 1977, Bourne first came to national attention as a winner of the Perrier Jazz Award in 2001, which was followed by an award for innovation at the BBC Radio Jazz Awards in 2002, and the International Jazz Festivals Organisation’s International Jazz Award in 2005. Renowned for his intensely personal and sometimes confrontational solo work, Bourne’s uncanny ability to balance delicacy and virtuosity, while establishing a close affinity with his audience, have become hallmarks of his concert performances.
Bourne’s first solo studio album, 'Montauk Variations' (The Sunday Times’ Leftfield Album of the Year in 2012), was celebrated for its sense of stillness and serenity, marking an important musical turning point in his career and the beginning of a new creative direction. Pieces from 'Montauk Variations' have appeared on compilations by Bonobo and Needwant.
Very much in demand as a collaborator and co-conspirator, Matthew Bourne has his fingerprints on a huge number of projects, having worked with artists as diverse as John Zorn, Annette Peacock, Nils Frahm, Nostalgia 77, Broadway Project, and Amon Tobin. In the last few years, he set up a studio in his rural West Yorkshire home in order to capture the spontaneous moments of inspiration his concerts have become famed for. With an arsenal of vintage synthesisers, tape delays and a creaky harmonium alongside his trusty piano and cello, he is preparing for a period of intense and varied activity in his own name after many years of collaboration.
Tonight, we are honoured to have him perform a solo set on his various assorted keyboards before Live Evil take to the stage. Be sure to get down early to catch his set.
