‘Gold Is The Metal (With The Broadest Shoulders)’, Coil’svital 1987 album, is remastered and reissued.
The album was the third in a trilogy that began with ‘Scatology’ and ‘Horse Rotorvator’, with much of the material emerging from the same period of recordings. It hones an ‘electro-erotics of sound’, blending textural instrumental pieces with notable field recordings -including a drunken brass band captured in Mexico and a Thai boxing arena recorded by Sleazy. A key moment of serendipity is found in ‘Metal In The Head’, which featuresa malfunctioning Fairlight sampler randomly rearranging and distorting the music.
Remastered under the guidance of original member Stephen Thrower, this new edition features restored artwork, previously unseen imagery and new sleeve notes, and marks the start of a new reissue series through The Grey Area of Mute.
Established in 1982 by Peter Christopherson (Sleazy) andJohn Balance, Coil began as an art and music projectbefore expanding into a trio with ‘Thrower’ in 1984. Their work remains a profoundly influential and enigmatic force within industrial and experimental music, fearlessly exploring themes of queerness, sex, drugs, magick and freedom.
