AWEN ENSEMBLE feat. Amy Clark +The Lilla Hall Trio
Tuesday 10th May 2022
Brudenell Social Club
7:30pm
Age Restriction: 14+ with Adult / 16+ without.
The first Jazzland Sessions show of May 2022, hosted by DJ Lubi, sees the return to the Brudenell of popular Leeds jazz band Awen Ensemble to launch their new single "Bendith", featuring special guest vocalist Amy Clark. Support slots at Jazzland Sessions often feature new bands or emerging artists and tonight we introduce a new jazz group - the Lilla Hall Trio featuring Woody Hayden and Oscar Horner.

Awen Ensemble are a Leeds based contemporary jazz collective formed by alumni of Leeds Conservatoire who also take inspiration from global folk music and fuse it all together into a melodically driven sound with a groove based focus. The word "Awen", meaning "poetic inspiration" in the Brittonic Celtic languages of Welsh/Breton/Cornish, and is a nod to the Celtic heritage of co-band leaders Emyr Penry Dance (trumpet), and Ruari Graham (guitar). The group also features other musical traditions outside jazz in their compositions including British folk music as well as Arabic, Latin American and African musical influences.

With their line up of sax, trumpet, guitar, bass, drums and vibraphone (vibes), Awen Ensemble's unique sound stands out not just in the Leeds jazz scene but also across the wider UK jazz world. They've played live shows around the country in Manchester/London/Wales/York, supported legendary US jazz drummer Billy Cobham and in 2021, they appeared at Gilles Peterson's much loved We Out Here Festival at Abbott's Ripon, Cambridgeshire.
Their debut single "Zorny" came out in autumn 2021 and tonight, they will launch their second single "Bendith" featuring guest Leeds jazz singer Amy Clark (Flood Company) on vocals. She'll be performing the single live with the band. This is another single in a trilogy recorded and filmed at The Green Room, Leeds, and will be leading towards the release of their debut EP later this year. Awen Ensemble are :
Emyr Penry Dance (trumpet/flugelhorn) - Saul Duff (tenor saxophone) - Samantha Binotti (vibraphone) - Ruari Graham (electric guitar) - Joe Wilkes (bass) - Eddie Bowes (drums) - special guest vocalist Amy Clark

Support act are the Lilla Hall Trio featuring Lilla on piano, Woody Hayden (Plantfood) on double bass and Oscar Horner (The Sunkissed Child) on drums. Lilla is currently a third year student at Leeds Conservatoire studying jazz piano but is already well known on the buzzing local jazz/global beats scene from playing keyboards with Afro-jazz/world jazz group The Goddess Collective. Tonight she steps out into the limelight with her own jazz trio to play a mix of original music and reimagined covers, mainly on the Brudenell's lovely new acoustic piano. The trio's set features straight ahead jazz alongside tracks with hip-hop beats and afrobeat rhythms, a variety of tempos from upbeat to slower more chilled vibes. Definitely worth getting down at 8pm to witness the birth of another great new young Leeds jazz band.
