The Residents
Saturday 4th February 2023
Leeds University Stylus

Originally, this tour had been planned for early 2021 already. The venues had been booked, everything had been planned – then came the pandemic. Maybe not really a surprise for The Residents, who had worn plague masks of the 17th century instead of their famous Eyeballs, when they performed their “In Between Dreams” show down in 2017 – as if they had foreseen the pandemic...

Their tour has been postponed, and now, in 2022, it happens to be an anniversary tour: The Residents are „holding up the Underground since 1972!“, as San Francisco’s increasingly curious eyeball collective claims on their tour poster after 50 years of adventures and obscurity.

As always, the group leaves their new show being quite a secret, but here’s what a spokesman of The Residents has told us about the new program:

„Featuring songs from the group’s classic period, as well as their most recent album, The Residents are pleased to announce the DOG STAB! Tour, gloriously celebrating their odd and improbable fifty years of existence. Focusing on the band’s iconic DUCK STAB! album from 1978, the performance will also spotlight music from Metal, Meat & Bone, released in the summer of 2020. Always unpredictable, the group will also feature a few unexpected surprises in this curious and unique carnival of chaos.”

Without any doubt, their album “Metal, Meat & Bone” from 2020 is another highlight in their fantastic career: Realizing a career-long ambition, The Residents finally explore The Blues! Having been turned on to the music of lost bluesman Alvin Snow, aka Dyin’ Dog, the group presents their interpretations of all ten of Snow’s known recordings, alongside several new compositions inspired by his work.

Fans will be familiar with The Residents love of cover versions and imposing themselves on the material of countless seminal artists. ‘Metal, Meat & Bone’ sees the group take that approach a step further, having discovered a previously unknown artist on their own doorstep and found themselves moved to record their own tribute to his work. The result is a collision of the pain of the wounded bluesman and the subversive and unpredictable sound of this most unique of bands. The Residents present an entire suite of ‘The Songs Of Dyin’ Dog’ alongside the original Alvin Snow recordings, as discovered by longtime friend and associate Roland Sheeehan.

“The costumes and players may change but The Residents remain the same: Bay Area myth-makers poking fun at modern America through their art, music and films.” (The Wire)
