DJ Lubi (Jazzland Sessions/RE:SOUL) is proud to present the Leeds return of London's queen of trip-hop/soul and future jazz.....the one and only B-AHWE!
After last autumn's brilliant "Motions" EP release and some great cosy launch parties, including a sold-out show in Leeds at Hyde Park Book Club, it's time for the singer to step up for her first ever headline show at the legendary Brudenell Social Club. The full 7 piece band (keys, guitar, bass, drums) will be onstage with Beth plus her three amazing backing singers. If you caught the gig last October at Hyde Park Book Club, you know it's a stunner of a live show.
Now residing in South London after shaping her sound in Leeds, future-soul singer/songwriter B-ahwe’s ability to tell intricately woven stories quickly began to turn heads. With a focus on rich vocal arrangements, lush instrumentals and poetic lyricism, she’s been likened to a ‘trip-hop Kate Bush’. Her versatility and arrangement skills have led to successful collaborations across different styles and genres with a number of artists. She has contributed her vocals to several projects in the last couple of years including underground UK hip-hop acts Lausse The Cat and Nix Northwest. She contributed lead vocals to prog jazz band Yaatri, as well as featuring with London jazzers Pyjæn and former Leeds global soul fusion act Necktr.
The release of her debut EP ‘Nuance’ in 2020 saw industry-wide support from Tom Robinson on BBC Radio 6, Emily Pilbeam on BBC Introducing West Yorkshire, and the Future Bubblers team on Worldwide FM. She was also named as Jazz Revelations’ "Breakthrough Artist Of 2020" off the back of its release. Prior to embarking on a UK tour in autumn 2019, B-ahwe appeared at Manchester Jazz Festival, World Island Festival and Tramlines, as well as supporting the likes of Yazmin Lacey, Noya Rao and Fatima.
After a year of recording in lockdown, she finally released her second EP " Motions" in September 2021 to great critical acclaim. "Motions" features an expansion of B-ahwe's unmistakable vocal talent, with nods to jazz greats Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald woven between contemporary influences such as Nai Palm and Noname. The songwriting and composition has matured with densely layered vocal harmonies decorated by beautiful guitar/keyboard parts and supplemented by powerful bass lines and driving beats. Long time friend and top electronic music producer TAMBALA was on mixing/production duties, adding broken beats to the future soul sound of B-ahwe. Check out the video of the single "Circles" on this page for a great example of this. When you hear it live with Beth and the three backing vocalists harmonising over the supertight band, it's even more impressive.
Support comes from a new young singer who graduated from Leeds Conservatoire last summer but is making waves with her own version of global soul. Yasmina Nahas, 'aka' The Sunkissed Child, is an artist/vocalist originally from sunny Lebanon in the Middle East but who relocated to Leeds to study popular music at Leeds Conservatoire. Through her music and captivating lyrics, Yasmina shares pieces of herself and her life story through a mix of cultures, languages and genres. A place where neo-soul, r'n'b, jazz and hip-hop blend naturally with Lebanese, Arabic and Middle Eastern cultural influences bringing some much needed musical sunshine to the cold north of England. She's accompanied by her 8 piece band of next gen Leeds allstar musicians, many who play with a host of great emerging jazz/soul/hip-hop bands such Plantfood, Yusuf Yellow, The Goddess Collective, State Of Satta and the Naali Collective. Yasmina is inspired by artists such as Erykah Badu and Mac Miller but with her addition of those Arabic/Middle Eastern flavours, she flips that standard neo-soul/hip-hop/r'n'b script into something really fresh and new. With releases coming soon on Leeds new tropical beats label Moma Cat Discos, Sunkissed Child is an artist to watch out for in 2022 for sure.
Opening the night is Leedssinger/songwriter/guitarist Chia Kali performing a solo show. Originally from Manchester, she brings that city's long standing soul tradition to her music but with added elements of folk and jazz. With beautiful songs about life experiences delivered with passion by just voice and guitar, she really commands an audience's attention at gigs that brings comparisons to Australian future soul star Nai Palm (Hiatus Kaiyote). Well worth getting down early to catch her set.
