DJ Lubi presents…
Harry Moon & The Cardboard Rocket + Flat Moon
Thursday, 07 December 2023
Brudenell Social Club / Leeds / UK
19:30
Harry Moon & The Cardboard Rocket formed in 2021 in Leeds with the aim of making energetic rock music minus electric guitars and distortion, replacing these with keys/saxophone/percussion/acoustic guitar, melodic compositions and a more soulful sound that comes together as great indie pop music. With a brilliant frontman in singer Harry Moon, the band are an accomplished and tight musical unit full of musicians from some of Leeds finest jazz/soul/world music outfits (Plantfood, Elusive Dip, The Brazukas, Rumberos de Palo), and they have built up a loyal following via their near legendary gigs across the city in the last 15 months, including two sold out shows at Hyde Park Book Club.
Their sound brings together their love of 70s pop/rock bands, 80s/90s indie music and funk/soul sounds from the past to the present. Lead singer Harry Moon writes melancholic and lyrical stories about everyday life that resonate with anyone who's been young, so basically everyone. Soaring melodies with big beats and sax solos have shades of "The Boss" Bruce Springsteen's biggest and best anthems. Songs like the recent single "Boys Don't Bounce" have the potential to be future alt-pop anthems being blasted out at all the big festivals. They released their debut EP "New Year" back in 2021 and have released a series of singles since then, including "Boys Don't Bounce" and the recent "Summer Looks So Good On You". It's now time to step up to the bigger stage and so tonight, they launch their new single with a debut Brudenell show.
Support band are Flat Moon, a 6-piece band based in Leeds who describe their music as "B-funk", a mashup of funk, punk, jazz, psychedelic rock with a distinctly "British" (hence the B in "B-funk") post-punk twist. Formed back in 2019, Flat Moon’s line-up consists of THREE guitars, electric bass, saxophone and drums but with a difference....they have no front-person! All six members are vocalists in various parts of the songs and they share lead and backup vocal duties between themselves. They've been releasing music since 2020, at first independently and then since 2021, via the Leeds label Monomyth Records. They've gigged across Leeds packing out all the best venues, as well as beyond the city's boundaries, and they've built up a reputation for great live shows (or as the band describes them, "f**king carnage"). Definitely another great Leeds indie band on the up.
Before it all gets a bit too rowdy and testosterone heavy, there is an opening act and she is a folk/soul/jazz/soft rock singer and guitarist with a band and a bag full of original material. Leeds based artist Eve Buckley brings a rich and authentic hybrid of soul, soft rock and jazz influenced styles reminiscent of artists such as Lianne La Havas, Paolo Nutini and Jordan Rakei. With such a distinctive voice she is able to captivate any room, leaving her audience mesmerised through her stunning lyricism and storytelling of her journey from adolescence to adulthood. With the Leeds nu-folk/soft rock/alt-soul fusion scene buzzing right now with singers like Kindelan/Rosie Miles/Sunday Lendis/Amy Clark, here's a new and exciting young emerging artist following in their footsteps. Get down early (8pm) to catch her at the start of her musical journey.
