Following the release of her third album Where Light Settles, saxophonist and composer Jasmine Myra returns with tide/ turn, an ambitious new four-track EP that sees her explore a more stripped-back, contemporary jazz sound. Reflective and
deeply immersive, the music draws on themes of contemplation, space and movement. Self-produced alongside contributing producer Matthew Halsall, the EP finds Myra embracing a more open and intimate approach to composition, placing a greater significance on the space between notes and the interplay between her band mates than ever before, tide/ turn marks another compelling step in the evolution of Myra's distinctive sound.
The title track unfolds around gently repeating piano and double bass figures, their hypnotic rhythms evoking the natural ebb and flow of the tide, while Myra's expressive saxophone drifts above. Partly inspired by guitarist Fabiano do Nascimento, reverie moves between dreamlike harp and piano passages and a richer, more expansive ensemble sound, capturing the sensation of drifting in and out of thought. boundless as the sea, an ode to trumpeter, composer Kenny Wheeler, embraces a smaller ensemble and an unhurried sense of space, allowing its delicate melodies to unfold with quiet beauty. Closing the EP, peace by peace takes inspiration from the Danish duo, Svaneborg Kardyb, growing organically from a simple piano melody into a richly textured arrangement that showcases Myra's playful approach to instrumentation.
Together, these four pieces offer a thoughtful and quietly uplifting EP, balancing intimacy and expansiveness with the warmth, with the standout melodies that have become hallmarks of Myra's music
