Jazz boss promoter Lubi Jovanovic finishes off a busy year of live gigs (50+ shows) with a final "Jazzland Sessions" seated jazz club show featuring two bands in the Leeds scene pushing the boundaries of the jazz music genre. Mu Quintet are avant-jazz heavy hitters featuring musicians who play with the Ancient Infinity Orchestra, Matthew Halsall ensemble and Live Evil. Tonight, they launch their debut album "Summit" at this show. Support comes from the young cosmic/spiritual jazz combo Amon Ra Collective who are beginning to make a name for themselves within the city's jazz scene.
Mu Quintet are a Leeds-based instrumental jazz outfit drawing inspiration from movements within the musical avant-garde. With a sound characterised by rich compositions, explosive improvisation and intricate melodies, they aim to push at the boundaries of the small ensemble. Mu Quintet comprises members of Ancient Infinity Orchestra, Matthew Halsall ensemble, Kinaara and Yard Nule.
The concept of ’Mu’ is meant to be an answer beyond the question. Mu Quintet is an Avant-Jazz group playing original compositions. The group aims to celebrate the act of improvisation and free expression in the modern era. Direct influences include; Ornette Coleman, Art Ensemble Of Chicago, Pharoah Sanders, Eric Dolphy. The compositions and playing style aim to present an alternative expression of the brilliance of jazz music, to the mainstream trends in modern jazz.
They made their Brudenell debut last June at DJ Lubi's Leeds Jazz Festival event supporting Live Evil. Tonight they return as headliners to launch their debut album "Summit" on Dirth Records which drops worldwide today across all digital platforms.
The band members are Matt Cliffe - tenor sax, Joel Stedman - flute and bass clarinet, Hugh Vincent - piano, Elliot Roffe - double bass, Simon Henry - drums.
Amon Ra Collective are a Leeds astro-spiritual jazz-funk group. Comprised from a pool of members, gigs have previously featured anywhere between 2-8 members onstage. They are currently exploring continuous groove-based group improvisation. Although the repertoire is often progressing, spiritual ideals of unity, change and reconnecting with the higher consciousness are unifying themes. Influenced by Sun Ra, The Coltranes (John and Alice), Pharaoh Sanders, electric Miles and folk music, they are one of the most adventurous new young jazz bands to emerge from the current intake at Leeds Conservatoire. Tonight they make their Brudenell debut.
“Amon Ra channel Sun Ra into 2022 and beyond with their cosmic blend of free-jazz and heavy grooves” – Fusebox (Leeds improvised music session).
This is the final "DJ Lubi Presents" show of 2022 and will be a "Jazzland Sessions" table seated show. Only 100 tickets so don't hang about as these seated sessions often sell out.
