Mu Quintet "Summit" Album Launch + Kawaiiyasu
Wednesday, 31st January 2024
Brudenell Social Club / Leeds / UK
19:30
For his first 2024 show at Brudenell, Leeds jazz legend DJ Lubi kicks off with a fiery avant garde jazz session from two bands in Leeds pushing the boundaries of the music
Mu Quintet are the Leeds-based instrumental acoustic jazz outfit drawing inspiration from movements within the musical avant-garde. With a sound characterised by rich compositions, explosive improvisation and intricate melodies, they aim to push at the boundaries of the small jazz ensemble. Mu Quintet comprises members of Ancient Infinity Orchestra, Matthew Halsall Band, Jasmine Myra Band, Kinaara and Yard Nule. They launched their debut album 'Summit' in December 2022 and tracks had strong support on radio via X-FM (Germany), Jazz FM, Worldwide FM, Ness FM, 1BTN, Totally Wire Radio and a great review in Jazz Journal. The album and it's tracks have been streamed over 900,000 times up to now! Following this amazing feat, Norwegian label Jazz Aggression picked up on the album and have licensed and scheduled it for a limited edition vinyl pressing. It will be available in the UK on 31st January 2024 and copies will be on sale at this album launch.
The concept of ’Mu’ is meant to be an answer beyond the question. Mu Quintet is an Avant-Jazz group playing original compositions. The group aims to celebrate the act of improvisation and free expression in the modern era. Direct influences include Ornette Coleman, Art Ensemble Of Chicago, Pharoah Sanders, Eric Dolphy, Sam Rivers and Andrew Hill. The compositions and playing style aim to present an alternative expression of the brilliance of jazz music, to the mainstream trends in modern jazz. They will be performing music from the vinyl along with new compositions.
The line up:
Matt Cliffe - tenor sax
Joel Stedman - flute and bass clarinet
Hugh Vincent - piano
Elliot Roffe - bass
Simon Henry - drums
Support comes from a new band of young jazz rebels drawn from the next generation of players emerging from Leeds Conservatoire.
Guitarist Harry Souter, saxophonist Harvey Parkin-Christie and Hong Kong/Japanese drummer Teruki Chan present Kawaiiyasu, a bass-less trio responding to the jazz and improvised music tradition. The group moves in and out of abstract materials freely, with compositional influences from figures such as Bill Frisell, Tony Williams, Paul Motian, as well as Avant Garde practitioners Peter Brötzmann and Milford Graves. The trio is characterised by explosive improvisation and dynamic composition, pushing the boundaries of intimate ensemble playing. Come early to catch some young jazz guns spitting fire.
This will be a 100 capacity limited ticket seated show.
