Northern folk musician Rosie Doonan releases her first album in nearly a decade on
Friday 16th October via Wipe Out Music.
‘Quiet Fear’ is a collection of songs written over the course of a long period of life-
affirming experiences and life-altering changes – ironically, these provided both the fuel
for writing and the pause in committing the songs to tape and showing them to the
world. Family is at the heart of Doonan’s writing and no stone is left unturned here, as
the listener is taken through the beautiful joy of bringing children into the world while
simultaneously the tumultuous nature of close relationships is laid bare.
There’s a pop sensibility to Rosie’s writing, as hooks and harmonies more than pepper
the album. The opening, however, leaves you with little doubt as to the depth of her
material – ‘Brother’ is a bold statement addressing addiction and illness; an ode to the
memory of a loved one still there in body but drifting away in spirit. It is Rosie at her
most fragile and affecting, and a beautiful introduction to the album.
“This year’s been black and it’s coming in like rain” is the opening line of ‘Coming Home’
that follows, but this reference to difficult times is lifted by the musical tone: “hold on
we’re all coming home” aligns itself with a positivity that suggests the album doesn’t
simply dwell in everything that life throws at the writer.
Over the course of 11 songs we’re taken on a journey that unfurls an incredible range of
musicality – what starts as one woman’s sombre reflection with only a piano to
accompany her soon dives headlong into full band compositions, glazed to perfection
with string arrangements and brass codas. We hit the highs as well as the lows, and at
the centre of it all is her voice – an instrument that has been finding itself since
childhood to where she stands now, in parenthood. You can hear the nuances of life in a
great vocal, and this is most certainly the case here.
We exist in a world where music can be over-produced and polished beyond
recognition; going further, at times we can’t even be sure what is real. When a vocalist
like Rosie Doonan reappears then it’s important to cherish it. These are real melodies,
crafted over years of dedication. These are achingly beautiful harmonies, carefully
constructed with an ear for feeling and an acute understanding of the human condition.
'Quiet Fear' gathers a life lived into an incredible collection of songs.
Rosie Doonan biography 2026
Rosie Doonan is a musician, composer, writer, topliner, and vocalist from West
Yorkshire. Hailing from Wakefield - with firm family roots in Tyne and Wear - Rosie cut
her teeth on the local music scene both at home and in neighbouring Leeds before
settling in Saltaire, a jewel in the crown of the industrious north. She's a northern lass
through and through, and all the better for it.
That, however, skips over a career that has seen her work across film, sync, advertising
and television, composing music for the likes of Universal, Audio Network and The
Nerve; she has tackled almost anything from soul to swing when both writing and
performing; but folk is where her heart is.
The 2010's saw album releases, yet long before that Rosie was soaking up the free folk
festivals of the British countryside, following (both literally and figuratively) in the
footsteps of her father and uncle playing in folk luminaries Hedgehog Pie. In 2006, she
was nominated for a BBC Folk Award with Ben Murray for their collaboration 'Mill Lane'.
Since those heady early days, you could argue there's been a break; that would be
underselling things a touch. Building a family takes time and effort, meaning new album
'Quiet Fear' will land on 16th October via Wipe Out Music not far off a decade after her
last full-length.
"I'm at that stage in life where I'm a knackered Mum getting chocolate for my birthday
that my kids then eat in front of me in bed" says Doonan, but if she's feeling tired then
she's not showing it. Musically, she's taken a backseat, but very much at the forefront -
touring internationally as a session musician with renowned artists such as Peter
Gabriel, Birdy, and John Metcalfe. Not to mention that she's also a choir leader across
multiple vocal groups around Yorkshire.
It's a cliché to say her writing has matured, but in this case, it would be entirely true.
Hints of Laura Marling and Richard Hawley creep in, but 'Quiet Fear' is very much the
original sound of a songwriter gathering all her musical experience and a life lived into a
collection of songs that she can be proud
