DJ Lubi presents…
Sunday Lendis (EP Launch) + Amy Clark
Sunday 7th May 2023
Leeds, Hyde Park Book Club
Vocalist Sunday Lendis has been quietly emerging from the worlds of jazz, folk and electronic music since she started her solo venture in 2021 alongside esteemed producer and guitarist Ed Allen (Mabgate Organ Trio, Mamilah). Telling tales of hope and adversity, Sunday’s glistening voice weaves through lush guitars and iridescent pianos offering the listener a generous sense of reflection and humanity.
Although brand new, Sunday Lendis has carved out a refreshingly original sound from an assorted list of influences including the works of Jasmine Myra, Snowpoet, Maria Chiara-Agiro and Bahla. As part of the bustling, cross-genre, creative city of Leeds, Sunday & Ed began writing together in the depths of lockdown where their musical partnership began to blossom, exploring the intricate relationship between organic and electronic sounds. They are joined by prominent and distinguished musicians from Leeds - Theo Goss (K.O.G, Ben Haskins Quartet), Joe Wilkes (Awen Ensemble, Yaatri) and Felix Burtulis-Webb (Yaatri, Platimo) - who contribute effortlessly to this emotive and euphoric music.
Her debut EP "Long Exposure" is set to release this spring, which includes a single release and vinyl pressing on Leeds independent label Come Play With Me in January. Already Sunday’s music has gained acclaim with her first two singles accumulating over 2500 streams and receiving praise from BBC Introducing West Yorkshire, Jazz Revelations, Balamii Radio and featuring in Atwood Magazine, Twisted Soul, Le Future Wave as well as Spotify editorial playlists such as Jazz UK, Serotonin and Somewhere Soul's New Music Friday Playlist alongside Raquel Martins & Quinn Oulton. The record is a poetic and bewitching affair, while her captivating and consuming live shows place Sunday Lendis as one to watch in the new era of UK jazz.
Born and raised in Australia Sunday moved to the UK in 2010 and graduated from Leeds College of Music in 2020. Since then she has performed at events and venues such as Jazz Cafe, The Old Queen’s Head Islington, Brudenell Social Club and festivals such as Green Man Festival, Shambala Festival, Liverpool International Jazz Festival, Manchester Jazz Festival. She has worked with established Northern artists including KOG, Tom Excell, B-ahwe and Yaatri. Since the project’s beginnings Sunday Lendis has been supported by The Sound & Music Composers Award, Launchpad and Leeds Conservatoire’s Artist Development Grant.
Amy Clark is a Scottish vocalist and improvisor based in Leeds. She graduated from Leeds Conservatoire in 2021 and whilst there, she had spent time composing, performing and collaborating with musicians in two jazz/contemporary music bands she co-founded, Flood Company and Ah Um Collective. After graduating, she began gigging around Leeds under her own name in a jazz quartet format. Her contemporary takes on jazz standards are inspired by artists Cécile McLorin Salvant and Theo Bleckmann while her original songs draw influence from Snowpoet, Laura Marling and Liane Carroll, combining thoughtful lyricism and intricate melodies. In 2022, she joined Leeds chamber jazz/folk jazz band Awen Ensemble and was featured on their single "Bendith", released that same year. It had strong radio support on Jazz FM, Worldwide FM, Basic Soul Radio, Totally Wired Radio, Radio D59B (Belgrade Serbia), Soul Power Radio, Universal Rhythms, Reform Radio, Radio Alhara (Palestine) and Radio Con (Vos Argentina). Many presenters commented on the lovely sung and spoken word vocals from Amy. In the past couple of years, Amy has also been a first call backing singer for future soul/global beats bands like KOG, Heritage and Kindelan. Tonight she opens the show for her friend Sunday Lendis and will feature her own compositions performed by an allstar band of familiar Leeds music scene faces.
