Deemed by The New York Times as “the father of modern bluegrass” and by NPR as “the great banjo liberationist,” Tony Trischka has spent more than six decades redefining what the banjo can do while remaining deeply rooted in the tradition that inspired him. Trischka’s mission comes into sharp focus with Earl Jam 2, the long-awaited companion to his Grammy and IBMA Award-nominated 2023 release Earl Jam. Both albums are built around a remarkable discovery: a cache of previously unheard recordings of Earl Scruggs and John Hartford informally jamming at Scruggs’ home between 1987 and 1998. Earl Jam 2 features 15 newly selected performances drawn from the same archive, spanning traditional standards, deep-cut fiddle tunes, and iconic American songs such as “Gentle on My Mind,” “Red River Valley,” and “That’s All Right.” As with Earl Jam, Trischka is joined by extraordinary collaborators, including Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Sam Bush, Del and Ronnie McCoury, Sierra Ferrell, The SteelDrivers, Sister Sadie, The Gibson Brothers, and more. Each guest brings a distinct voice, yet the performances remain unified by their devotion to Scruggs’ original phrasing, tone, and rhythmic drive. While grounded in archival material, Earl Jam 2 feels vibrantly alive, connecting bluegrass history to its present and future, and a celebration of lineage, community, and the enduring power of the banjo. More than a tribute, Earl Jam 2 is a living conversation with Earl Scruggs, carried forward by one of his most devoted and imaginative heirs.
