CD1 opens with one of the decade’s most iconic soundtrack moments, Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Mrs. Robinson’, featured in The Graduate and a UK Top 5 hit, followed by The Monkees’ ‘I’m A Believer’, a four-week chart-topper. The Beach Boys bring sun-soaked pop with ‘Do It Again’, before The Flowerpot Men’s ‘Let’s Go To San Francisco’ and Scott McKenzie’s enduring anthem ‘San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)’ celebrate the city at the centre of ‘flower-power’ and the ‘Summer Of Love’. The Mamas & The Papas follow with the classic ‘Dedicated To The One I Love’, before #1s from Gary Puckett and the Union Gap with ‘Young Girl’ and Love Affair’s ‘Everlasting Love’. The Foundations’ ‘Build Me Up Buttercup’ reached #2 in the UK, and leads to legendary soul vocalists – featuring Stevie Wonder’s ‘For Once In My Life’, Diana Ross & The Supremes’ ‘Love Child’ and Dionne Warwick’s sublime ‘Do You Know The Way To San Jose’. Dusty Springfield continued her fantastic run of hits with ‘I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten’ and The Hollies’ emotional blockbuster ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother’ hit the charts twenty years before it would become a #1. The disc continues with a run of British pop-rock #1s from The Move, with ‘Blackberry Way’, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown’s fantastically theatrical ‘Fire’ and Zager & Evans look to the future with ‘In The Year 2525’, which also hit the top in the U.S. The final stretch celebrates reggae and ska with Desmond Dekker & The Aces’ ground-breaking #1 ‘Israelites’, Harry J Allstars’ instrumental favourite ‘Liquidator’ and Jimmy Cliff’s ‘Wonderful World, Beautiful People’, before Johnny Nash closes the disc with ‘Cupid’.

CD2 opens with Glen Campbell’s masterpiece, ‘Wichita Lineman’, followed by Bobbie Gentry’s superb version of ‘I’ll Never Fall In Love Again’. Bobby Goldsboro’s emotional ballad, ‘Honey’ is up next followed by nostalgic television favourite ‘White Horses’ from Jacky, before Louis Armstrong’s peerless ‘What A Wonderful World’ delivers one of the most beloved recordings of the era. The Johnny Mann Singers lift the mood with ‘Up-Up And Away’ and it leads into a stellar run of ‘easy’ nuggets…Oliver’s ‘Good Morning Starshine’ and The Seekers’ ‘Morningtown Ride’ bring harmony-filled pop and Andy Williams’ ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’ and Astrud Gilberto & Walter Wanderley’s ‘Call Me’ add sophisticated easy listening. Vikki Carr’s dramatic ‘It Must Be Him’ and Anita Harris’ ‘Just Loving You’ feature before Tom Jones with his #2 smash ‘Delilah’. Kenny Rogers & The First Edition’s ‘Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love To Town’, O.C. Smith’s ‘The Son Of Hickory Holler’s Tramp’ and Georgie Fame’s ‘The Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde’ showcase the era’s rich storytelling lyricism and are joined by Mary Hopkin’s ‘Goodbye’ and Cat Stevens with his huge hit ‘Matthew & Son’. Joe Dolan’s ‘Make Me An Island’ brings another chart favourite, having reached #2, while Long John Baldry’s ‘Let The Heartaches Begin’ leads to the discs’ closing track from Elvis Presley with the powerful and poignant ‘In The Ghetto’, a Top 3 hit that remains one of his most admired tracks.

CD3 opens with a run of essential soul classics led by Marvin Gaye’s timeless ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’, one of the era’s defining recordings, alongside Stevie Wonder’s smooth ‘My Cherie Amour’. Next is Otis Redding's signature song '(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay', issued a month after his tragic death, coming ahead of Smokey Robinson & The Miracles’ enduring ‘The Tracks Of My Tears’. More Motown brilliance comes from The Isley Brothers, The Temptations with the Northern Soul favourite ‘Get Ready’, the Four Tops, Diana Ross & The Supremes and Martha Reeves & The Vandellas with ‘Jimmy Mack’… More classic soul and R&B follows with Sam & Dave’s ‘Soul Man’ and Sly & The Family Stone’s hugely influential ‘Dance To The Music’, before soul-influenced hits including The Box Tops’ US No.1 ‘The Letter’ and Tommy James & The Shondells’ energetic ‘Mony Mony’. Brilliantly original pop features next from Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich’s with ‘Zabadak!’. CD4 showcases the sheer originality, diversity and ambition of this rich period of late-’60s pop as Procol Harum open with the era-defining #1 ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’, a 10-million copy worldwide seller, and one of the decade’s most distinctive recordings. Small Faces’ psychedelic favourite ‘Itchycoo Park’ and Barry Ryan’s epic ‘Eloise’ follow alongside major hits from The Tremeloes, The Move and Manfred Mann’s #1 ‘The Mighty Quinn’. Amen Corner, The Turtles and Marmalade keep the fabulous pop coming, while Honeybus’ ‘I Can’t Let Maggie Go’ and Peter Sarstedt’s celebrated UK No.1 ‘Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)’ highlight the increasingly diverse styles of songwriting during the period. The set continues with Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin’s radio-banned #1 ‘Je T’aime Moi Non Plus’, before pure pop favourites from Mama Cass, Esther & Abi Ofarim and Sandie Shaw’s Eurovision-winning ‘Puppet On A String’. Further chart smashes follow from Cilla Black, Clodagh Rodgers and Herman’s Hermits, ahead of Lulu’s U.S. #1 ‘To Sir With Love’. One of Dionne Warwick’s greatest vocal performances, ‘This Girl’s In Love With You’, comes before the collection’s final track…Engelbert Humperdinck’s 5-week chart-topper ‘The Last Waltz’, brings this celebration of the late-1960s pop landscape to a close.
