The Canadian band that would become White Wolf paid their dues for many years on the club circuit: initially under the handle of Farmer, then Slamm, with a change to Warrior in 1981. By 1983 they took a risk and borrowed a large amount of money from their bassist's parents to create a high-end demo to shop for a deal. That demo made its way to RCA in New York, and the band got the recording contract they had so long wanted and needed. After pulling together what they felt was a superior selection of songs, earmarked for their debut album, they started to feel that the name Warrior didn't represent their sound and the change was then made to White Wolf. Recording their debut album ‘Standing Alone’ (produced by Danny Lowe and Jack Richardson) which received a good amount of airplay in Canada and in certain places in the US like Cleveland, Philadelphia and New York.
Sadly, an administrative error with visas left the band unable to play a smattering of US shows which had been booked. However, they eventually made it to the US and played various gigs, including dates in Texas with Australian rockers Angel City. After a handful of gigs back at home in Canada plans were made to record a follow-up album, so the pressure was back on.
Released at the end of 1984 ‘Standing Alone’ - by today's standards - sold well, and it may only have been the cancelled dates and the lack of a long tour with a major band that held them back. Packed out with several great songs and a, punchy production, the future was set for the follow-up album 'Endangered Species’. Both albums stand tall as a fine testament to a band that shone brightly and didn't receive the attention they fully deserved at the time.
