Record Store Day at Crash: Top Tips

Queues, wish lists, hidden gems… Record Store Day can feel overwhelming, so we’ve put together everything you need to know to survive and enjoy the day at Crash.

What is record store day!

Record Store Day first started in 2007, when a group of record shop owners in the US came together to celebrate and spread the word about record shop culture.

The first official event took place on 19th April 2008; and nearly 18 years on, record shops all over the world take part in what has become one of the biggest days in the music calendar.

It’s a day for everyone who makes up the world of record shops: the staff, the customers, the artists and the labels. It brings together the regulars who make up the local record community and welcomes plenty of new faces too.

Record Store Day releases are only available through official RSD shops from Saturday 18th April 2026.
Pre-orders and reservations aren’t possible. It’s an in-store first day, and any remaining stock will only be available online from Monday 20th April 2026 at 8pm.

What Makes RSD Special At Crash?

RSD is the busiest day of the year for us. We see familiar faces, new customers, collectors, casual browsers and everyone in between.

The queue always has a great atmosphere. People are polite, friendly and look out for one another in the early morning buzz.

We try to make the experience as seamless as possible. Staff are on hand throughout the morning giving stock updates, helping with wish lists and doing everything we can to get you as much of your list as possible (stock depending).

Yes, it’s busy first thing, but by midday there’s usually a bit more space for those who prefer a slower start. You can browse the racks, check the updated RSD list, and take your time.

And of course, there are giveaways, service with a smile, and Ian on the door to keep things entertaining.

The Important Bits!

We want to keep the day smooth, fair and fun for everyone. So here’s what you need to know:

We open at 8:00am.
If you’re hoping for one of the bigger titles, it’s best to arrive earlier rather than later.

The queue starts early.
While we can’t stop anyone from queuing overnight, we don’t advise it. The Headrow is a busy street with plenty going on late at night. If you do arrive early, please wrap up warm and stay safe.

It’s first come, first served.
No saving spots in the queue — this keeps it fair for everyone getting up early.

One copy per title, per person.
This helps give as many people as possible a fair chance.

Have your list ready.
All RSD stock is behind the counter. Bring a written list, hand it to a member of staff when asked, and we’ll work through it with you.

No pre-orders, reservations or holds.
Once a title has gone, it’s gone.

Accessibility.
We can’t offer queue jumps, but if you have accessibility needs please speak to a member of staff, we’ll accommodate as best we can. We also have a ramp available for wheelchair access.

Tips for Surviving the Morning:

  • Bring coffee or water

  • Grab breakfast before you queue

  • Dress for the weather (April can do anything)

  • Charge your phone

  • Make a list, but stay flexible

  • Be kind to each other

  • Be kind to staff

  • Have fun

  • Follow @crashrecords on Instagram for all RSD updates

Hope For The Best, Plan For The Pressing Run

We’d love for everyone to walk away with everything on their list. The reality is that Record Store Day releases are limited and allocations aren’t always huge.

We ask for everything, but on some titles we may receive fewer copies than expected and occasionally none at all. Some releases fly out instantly. Others last throughout the day. We never truly know until the day is underway.

Some titles listed online may not be UK releases, and occasionally certain records are delayed. If you’re unsure, our staff will always be happy to check.

If we’ve sold out of something, there are other shops in Leeds taking part and we’re happy to point you in the right direction.

Whether you get your top pick or discover something unexpected, the day is about showing up, sharing the moment, and celebrating music together.

For the Browsers and the Late Risers

The early queue isn’t for everyone... and that’s absolutely fine.

Once the initial rush settles, the shop becomes more relaxed. There’s still plenty to browse, and there are often RSD titles available later into the day. We keep an updated list in-store and in the window so you can check what’s left.

You don’t have to do the 6am start to be part of it.

(That said, if you’re after one of the biggest releases, earlier is always safer.)

What It Means To Us

Like many independent record shops, Record Store Day has become the biggest day in our calendar: not just because it’s busy, but because of what it represents.

It’s a reminder that record shops still matter. That people still care about physical music, that there’s something special about holding a record in your hands and sharing that excitement with others in the shop.

Seeing the queue wrap around in the morning and the shop buzzing all day is something we never take for granted.

Talk to your fellow queue neighbours. Share your finds. Celebrate your local record shop.

It’s friendly, it’s organised, and we’re here to help. Whether you arrive early or later in the day, you’re always welcome.

Just turn up and enjoy it.
